Answer: Blue and white are the colors of the Israeli flag, which originated with the tallit/tallis (prayer shawl) a four-cornered garment with a four-stringed, knotted "fringe" on each corner. Each "fringe" (tzittzit) originally had one string dyed blue, the dye coming from the Techelet, an unknown mollusk. Today, there is a disagreement as to whether we actually know what Techelet is, or whether it no longer exists. The tallis shawl itself even today often has blue stripes on a white background, which, minus the Star of David, looks very much like the Israeli flag.
