how many anchovies in a scoop?

Question: As in for use as bait, at the bait station.. Scoop, half scoop, etc..

Answer: It depends on things like how big the anchovies are (2" to 6"), how big the net is, and the mood of the guy at the bait dock. (If he knows you're a good tipper, you'll get more bait). Generally the net is 12 inches in diameter and a little deeper than that; a scoop will therefore be a couple gallons of anchovies. I've fished all day with 3 of us on a private boat with one scoop, and had bait left over, but if you're chumming, you'll need more. If you need a number, I'd guess 150 or so 5-inch anchovies (but this is just off the top of my head, and I may be way off.) Bottom line, a "scoop" is the amount of anchovies the bait guy gives you when you pay for a scoop. Keep in mind that if the bait dock has sardines, which tend to be larger, a "scoop" will contain fewer baits. (Or if it has squid, the scoop will have fewer baits and be considerably more expensive.) Also, sometimes the bait guy may have to scoop twice to get a "scoop", if the baits aren't crowded tightly enough to fill the net in one pass.
